did my first real bike-run brick yesterday it was pretty successful running on my part. legs feel like lead but because i was so preoccupied with the feeling i still managed an even 7 mile clip after 10 miles on the bike i was pleased. swam this morning and that is where i felt like crap- i am tired no biggie. tomorrow ill swim 50 laps and get back on track. ordered a book called bounce, after reading outliers this book hit the spot anyone out there (listening fabian) read that book it will change your perception of talent.

i have been letting down i know and i am sorry
yesterday did my first brick- went well swam 750 meters and ran 3 miles all in all a good workout
today i just finished a mile and a half running and 5 biking and i must say i am way out of biking shape it looks to be my worst event i have 2 weeks to work on that or i wont meet my time goal of 1hr 25mins
i am hoping i can borrow a decent bike mine is a mountain bike and it does take a lot more energy to move
weather is hot now and it will stay like this for at least 7 months workouts are either before dawn or indoors otherwise you risk heat stroke- thats brownsville living for you

Just played a very intensive tennis match last night and I lost 6-7 7-6 6-7 three straight tiebreakers and i feel i should have won- I really cant stand losing it sucks. How does this relate to endurance you ask- well for one, the stupid match lasted almost three hours which for amateur players is an eternity, but most importantly my right achilles is hurting like crazy. i have already torn my left achilles and it is a horrible injury to sustain and to come back from so naturally i am a bit worried that this will turn into something that could preclude me from running. Any suggestions out there? I am going to stretch it every day for sure and I hope that take care of it
Ok thats it for todays gripe

just got back from a fishing trip. pretty good as always although the fishing was a bit weak. I am ready to resume training tomorrow, and it is now on for the capital of texas triathlon. my friend's bachelor party was moved back a week (hell yea) so now i am looking at 30 days until the race. clock is ticking and although it is a sprint race it will prove challenging especially if i decide to ignore a serious training regiment
something has been troubling me of late- why the hell cant texas come up with one power running back- i mean we are texas- what gives?

hitting the pool hard, ignoring the road and the bike just as hard. I will be ready to start running again on sunday, I am going to run an easy 6 miler. This weekend I am attending a San Antonio Spurs playoff game and wil probably get a bit crazy with sleeping, eating, and hydration habits but hopefully the damage will be minimal.
Question- What will the steelers do at this years draft?

Swimming is now at the top of the list on things I must improve on. I am pretty confident in the pool but if I do an open water swim with many people around me splashing water into my mouth every time I take a breath now thats another story. So far three of my friends want to do the triarhlon and as times goes on Im sure more will join in. I am getting ready but I am not ready to buy a bike just yet, they are too expensive and unless I know that I will be doing triathlons for a while ( and I think this will turn out to be the case) I am going to hold out just a little longer
heres a tip- add a little jojoba oil to your shampoo to use after swimming

This idea of doing an iron man is now gaining traction and I cant seem to shake it. I think I will first try a half iron man in the summer and see how that goes.
Today I was going to do a 10k I just didnt feel well when I woke up so I cancelled, first time in a while that I do that. My body thanks me for it although my friends will probably give me crap about it.
Sunday- the worst of all days Friday- the best

I just signed up for the Capital of Texas Triathlon in May. Unfortunately, that coincides with one of my friends bachelor parties and I probably wont be able to make it. I will however train as if I were going just in case and to get some more experience in these "transition" deals. Transition refers to the time when you are done swimming and tackle the bicycle or when you are done with the cycling part and then jump off to run. Apparently this is what you need to practice the most in order to be successful in triathlons.
at this point I am truly happy and satisfied with the goals I've set out to attain.
i have joined our local "bad ass" pool and i am swimming 1 kilometer with great fluidity and with great rhythm- alas, the pool has become a sanctuary- just like the road.

Had a total blast in Dallas. I finished in 1:38.54 but considering the hilly terrain and the fact that we had a little too much liquid fun the evening before Id say it was an astounding success.
The weekend revealed to me that my club and group of running friends does have quite a bit of talent. We can pretty much stick to our goals regardless of what happens. It feels very good to say that I beat Mr Troy "americas quarterback" Aikman's ass by 15 minutes and sweeter still, I was the only one clever enough to kiss a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader (She was befuddled) right at the finish line. I am a huge steelers fan and so it goes without saying that the cowboys rank pretty low on my support scale but I do admit, that stadium is something else, especially that screen WOW.
I will now concentrate on running Berlin at 3:14, enough to qualify for Boston- I WILL DO IT
We learned that the mind needs to be as trained and tougher than the body, you CAN will yourself to do things you thought you couldn't do.
For now a nice one week break with no running, after that, a couple of easy weeks, and then the training begins.
keep up the pace

The hell with it
I am in a foul mood because I did not get into the NYC marathon via the lottery draw, my wife did. this pretty much makes it so that if you are going in a group or with family or whatever, the lottery process will definitely screw you over. There has to be a better way thats all I am saying. I will try for Berlin in September, I am in along with my wife, I just dont got no moolah. I am going to raise funds- I have decided not to sit on my ass anymore and to go for broke. I will raise the cash or I will not be going. For once, I will stick to my word.
Tomorrow we leave for Dallas and I know it will be great but we have to be careful not to fool around too much, after the race anything goes bur before you need to play it conservative.
I NEED TO QUALIFY FOR BOSTON I have the talent as well as most of my friends its just a matter of willing ourselves to do it its 7:28 pace all the way through- very doable- not easy (what is?) but not impossible
Ok im ranting now
ill see you later
question- What hurts more- a long marathon at a steady pace or a short 10k at a blistering pace?

Wednesday, last run before dallas I will go for an easy 4-5 miler in the afternoon. I have been unable to wake up in the mornings and now with warmer weather it will become imperative that I do so. I blame my youngest daughter- she will sleep with us the whole night and make sure I wont.
Today we also find out the NYC Marathon lottery results and from talking to my wife, I gather she finally is excited and wishing that we both get in. I will be very happy if we do and very disappointed if we dont- NYC should inspire us to set some really good personal times.
We have finally had our team shirts made and I hope they come out fine although i suspect they will fit a couple a guys a bit snug.
I am reading the autobiography of tennis great Andre Agassi (its called OPen) and I am now becoming obsessed once again with the game of tennis, I hope some of my kids like it enough to really play and I hope I can handle being a challenging yet patient and nurturing coach.
well, thats about it for today wish me luck in that lottery

Today I begin one of two of the last speed workouts for next saturdays race. I will run 4 miles at 7 min pace, tomorrow I will run a nice 3-4 mile recovery and on Wednesday I will run another 4 at 7 Minute workout, my last one. I am ready for the race and for a little bit of a break after. We are going to leave on friday and we are going to camp in San Marcos before heading to Dallas. Everyone is excited and I could not have been more pleased with how the group's cohesion and dynamism has really helped each one of us members.
I have already shot a movie that will be uploaded soon, I am just trying to figure out how best to edit it.
I will also be posting pictures and video in our facebook page.
Crap, I am sorry I haven't even mentioned that. If you feel up to it I invite you to check our facebook page under endurance and adventure we are based in brownsville texas

Have been a bit tired the whole week, I feel I may be under-sleeping and not recovering fully from hard workouts. I am running very little and have not done any swimming or spinning. I have been playing tennis quite a bit and some soccer. Monday we pulled a little Villanova move on our soccer league. We are currently next to last and played the second best team in the league and beat them. Every time I play soccer it takes a week to recover, I really am getting older.
After our upcoming run, I am planning on taking a little break from running maybe run twice a week but only 4 miles each time and I would like to start and finish either P-90X or Insanity.
Hopefully my body will respond well and the strength gained will be used for the shot at qualifying for Boston down the line- April 7th Ill know if i am to be one of the chosen few to run NYC Marathon. Three of my friends already ran it and Fabian currently hold the best marathon time which of course everyone tries to beat.
We'll see what happens

We had a very good but extremely hard 5k race on sunday. Finish time was 19:40 but I was sore from long run on friday and felt my legs and lungs burn the whole time.
Today I want to share an easy and quick breakfast recipe and one easy and quick "immune booster" drink
Oatmeal
add 1/2 cup of rolled oats with one cup of water or milk and microwave for 1.25mins add one or two teaspoons of flaxmeal, a little cinnamon, some raisins, a few almonds, and a spoonful of honey or real maple syrup. thats it, perfectly nutritious and delicious

drink
mix a teaspoon of ascorbic acid ( pure vitamin c) easily found on vitamin shoppes and gnc's anywhere and a tiny amount of glutamine which is an amino acid in powder form also easily available and drink- it will be tart but it will give your system a boost.
hope this helps

Excellent run yesterday night
12 miles in 1:28 about 7:20 per mile
I am ready to do this- I will try to lose about 4 lbs from here to race day (april 11) and do 4 more short speed workouts and one last semi-long run of 8 miles.
My goal is to go under 1:38 and now I believe I may even be able to go under 1:37-36
I am pretty tired and probably wont run again until monday
I will be uploading a video on making some wonderful 5 grain pancakes to gobble up after those long tough workouts
have a good one

Just finished doing p-90x plyometrics
Have been doing them for a while and let me tell you that it is an absolutely fantastic and beneficial workout. I am a bit partial to the plyometrics and leg workouts on the first phase. I feel those two make a great addition to any running or endurance program.
If you have a chance give those two specific workouts a try and I am certain you will be pleased with the results.
It will be taxing on your body but it will be well worth it
happy training

Well
Today was an especially difficult day trying to get back into a groove. I had t go back to work after a wonderful week off for spring break. There are only 3 weeks left before the big race and I need to get going.
I will be racing in Dallas Texas in a half marathon and I really want to break 1 hour and 38 mins.- I feel thats a good time to aim for, not too difficult, hard enough to make me work but doable with 2 running days per week
Observation- It has been my experience that once you have a good level of fitness you are able to maintain it and even make small improvements with 2-3 days of running a week. You do however need to keep working out with swimming or biking or tennis ( like i do)
yes- I feel comfortable backing some of the research that claims 2-3 days is enough even for marathons
tip #1 please don't forget to eat a small banana or fruit or even a cereal bar right after a long run- it will hep you tremendously the next day
